Paper Abstract:      We undertook the Life Science Dictionary (LSD) Project over a decade ago and now its website records more than 120,000 hits every day. The main purpose of the project was to help improve the English of Japanese researchers, especially in the field of life-sciences, by providing them with access to an on-line dictionary, thesaurus, and concordance/collocation information retrieval system. Researchers may thereby refer to computer analyses of an English corpus consisting of approximately 80,000,000 running words drawn from life-science related research papers published in academic journals. Although Japanese researchers generally invest considerable time and effort on raising their English writing skills, they are rarely able to achieve a native-like level of English. In particular, it is difficult for them to distinguish different usages of words sharing similar meanings such as chance, opportunity, possibility, feasibility, likelihood, and probability. In writing an academic paper, it is necessary for researchers to select the most appropriate word from among words of similar meaning in order to avoid potential misunderstanding and loss of credibility. To compensate for this, we established a system in which users may consult an on-line dictionary and thesaurus containing concordance/collocation information. The system we have developed may therefore help to enhance the accuracy of learners’ word selections.
